Chapter 118: Purpose
Overview
Vashet forces Kvothe to confront that the purpose of Adem hand fighting—and the Lethani—is control, not harm. Kvothe shows progress, finally defeating Celean once and earning a new technique. Celean’s reckless game beneath the sword tree dramatizes Adem poise and peril, prompting Vashet’s stern correction.
Summary
Kvothe spars with Vashet across Ademre’s windy hills. When Kvothe jokes that fighting is to hurt people, Vashet locks him in Sleeping Bear and ignores his submission until pain forces clarity. She explains the hold’s true purpose: control—of self, surroundings, and an opponent—declaring this the heart of the Lethani.
Released, Kvothe acknowledges the lesson as Vashet critiques his sloppy hand work and dangerous wildness with a sword. Despite frustrations, Kvothe notes steady improvement in language and training under Vashet’s guidance.
Continuing his bouts with the young prodigy Celean near the sword tree, Kvothe finally defeats her once. Celean, surprised yet sporting, rewards him by demonstrating a two-handed variant of Breaking Lion, marking his tangible progress.
While Kvothe rests, Celean darts beneath the sword tree’s whirling, razor leaves, skillfully threading through using named forms and reaching the trunk multiple times. Her daring display highlights Adem agility and risk. When Vashet returns, she scolds Celean sharply, reasserting discipline and the primacy of control over reckless bravado.
