Chapter 45: Consortation

Kvothe plays to a packed, attentive house at Anker’s on Felling night, flush with recent success and feeling in control, though he still misses Denna. As he finishes a song, three constables and a Commonwealth sumner arrive, present sealed charges, and name him for Consortation with Demonic Powers, Malicious Use of Unnatural Arts, Unprovoked Assault, and Malfeasance.

Despite Simmon’s challenge and Anker’s concern, the sumner’s gold-banded rod and paperwork prove legitimate. Constables shackle Kvothe in iron and march him across Stonebridge to Imre in the winter cold. The next morning, Simmon and Elxa Dal clarify the case stems from months earlier when Kvothe called the wind in Imre; despite the University’s prior whipping, jurisdiction lies with Commonwealth courts.

Ambrose avoids any visible role, but Imre’s influential nobles advance the case, protecting the University’s enemies while preserving appearances. The frightening arrest turns into six days of tedious legal ritual: letters are read and recorded, procedure recited, and authorities quoted in both civil and church courts.

Kvothe defends himself; Elxa Dal and Arwyl submit and read supportive letters. The proceedings disrupt Kvothe’s studies, halt his Fishery work, and crush hopes of a local patron. Ultimately, the courts clear him of wrongdoing.

Though vindicated, Kvothe realizes he underestimated politics and reputation: even acquittal carries costs, and unseen enemies can reach him through law and influence.
