Chapter 6: Love

Stanchion seats Kvothe onstage at the Eolian. Kvothe introduces his lute with reverence, then opens with the simplest folk tune, Bell-Wether, performed with exhausting virtuosity. The room splits: some applaud, while many musicians laugh at the deliberate inversion. Kvothe counters with Illien’s fiendishly difficult Tintatatornin, played with feigned boredom, amplifying the joke: make the hard look easy and the easy look impossibly hard.

Back at the table, Marie praises the wit; Stanchion cautions Kvothe that embarrassing the uninitiated gentry breeds resentment. Discussion reveals Ambrose Jakis has poisoned Kvothe’s chances at a patron, despite Count Threpe’s efforts. Kvothe accepts this, preferring to play for peers who appreciate the craft.

Manet suavely secures a future drink with Marie, surprising the others. As musicians buy rounds, Stanchion’s concern lingers: Kvothe’s social misstep may cost him support. Kvothe prioritizes immediate needs—tuition—over mending noble opinions.

Lily delivers drinks from an anonymous admirer. Manet exposes the sounten trick—ordering water disguised as a drink—explaining how performers split proceeds with the house. Kvothe confirms and renegotiates a better cut with the barman. He cashes out for a talent and six jots and tucks away two bottles of nutrient-heavy Bredon beer.

After music and cards, Kvothe, Wilem, and Simmon leave; Kvothe sings Jackass, Jackass en route. Restless, he wanders the University by night—the Masters’ Hall, Crucible, and the lit Archives he cannot enter. He climbs into his room at Anker’s, lights a lamp with sympathy despite a tipsy haze, and reflects that, despite his Ruh roots, the University has begun to feel like home.
