Chapter 73: Blood and Ink

Kvothe opens with Teccam’s philosophy on secrets—of the mouth and of the heart—framing the chapter’s conflict. The next day, Denna invites Kvothe to hear her new song. Kvothe proposes the Maer as her public patron; Denna refuses, fiercely protective of her autonomy and of her secret patron, Master Ash. Pressed, Denna makes Kvothe swear not to investigate Ash, and he binds himself with a solemn oath.

They walk to their secluded greystone grove. Denna, barefoot and excited, performs her unfinished composition: a tragic ballad portraying Lanre as a wronged hero cursed by Selitos. Kvothe recognizes the tale from Skarpi but finds Denna’s version inverted, powerful yet dangerously false.

Stunned, Kvothe first corrects a name, then insists Lanre was a traitor, not a hero. Denna defends her research and collaboration with Master Ash, arguing it is an old story. Kvothe warns that in the version he knows, Lanre becomes one of the Chandrian, urging caution. Denna laughs derisively at the mention of the Chandrian, inflaming Kvothe’s shame and anger.

The discussion erupts into a bitter, personal argument. Kvothe accuses Denna of poor choices and running from closeness; Denna counters that Kvothe tries to control and “fix” her, resenting his judgment and his disdain for her patron. They trade insults, wound each other, and leave separately.

Hours later, Kvothe’s anger cools to regret. He resolves to write Denna and reveal the truth of his family’s murder and the Chandrian. Faced with the lifelong secret in his heart, he cannot begin; wine loosens nothing. The page stays blank until, in frustration, he bloodies his hand—blood flowing easier than ink.
