Chapter 79: Signs

After breakfast, Marten begins teaching Kvothe and Tempi to find subtle trail signs, emphasizing wilted or bent leaves and disturbed moss or stones rather than obvious clues. When signaling becomes an issue, Kvothe’s two-note whistle proves unsuitable, so he proposes a stopgap: a twig linked by sympathy to Marten’s half, which startles Marten before Kvothe explains.

Marten then walks them back over their own steps, forcing Kvothe and Tempi to recognize every careless mark they left: scuffed lichen, overturned needles, and shredded leaves. He stresses the danger of their task and teaches them to cover tracks properly, warning that poor concealment can be more revealing than leaving signs alone.

As they start the wide-area search, Kvothe and Tempi spot several promising disturbances and summon Marten with a gentle twitch on the sympathetic twig. Kvothe’s hopes soar, but Marten reveals he planted these obvious signs to keep them engaged and awake to detail.

To maintain focus, Marten proposes a standing wager: Kvothe and Tempi earn a ha’penny for every planted sign they find; Marten wins a silver bit for each they miss. The game sharpens their attention; despite missing a few, they end the day slightly ahead.

That evening by the fire, Marten tells a familiar tale of a widow’s son, magic boots, and a rescued princess. Dedan and Hespe respond warmly, while Tempi listens motionless, letting his food grow cold. The story soothes the group and reminds Kvothe of distant, more comfortable days as the long search stretches ahead.
