Chapter 37: A Piece of Fire
Overview
Kvothe tells a parable at Faeriniel: a starving beggar is refused aid by merchants, mercenaries, frightened travelers, and even an Amyr bound by duty. At last, the Edema Ruh offer food, water, and family in exchange for stories. Wilem twice interrupts to challenge details about Cealdim and the Amyr, ending in a wager.
Summary
By the greystone, Kvothe begins the tale “A Piece of Fire.” A nameless old beggar, hungry and exhausted, comes to Faeriniel and seeks “a piece of fire” and food from five separate camps.
At the first fire, Cealdish traders demand payment; the beggar has none and is turned away. Kvothe pauses to note it’s just the story when Wilem bristles. At the second, four Adem stand silent and unsettling; recalling their fearsome reputation, the beggar withdraws.
At the third, Aturans threaten to hitch him to their cart in place of a dead donkey, so he flees and hides. At the fourth, Vintas mistake him for a barrow draug and argue remedies of fire, salt, and iron; the beggar retreats again.
At the fifth fire, the beggar meets an Amyr who claims urgent duty to save an innocent at dawn. Weighing strength for that task against the beggar’s hunger, the Amyr withholds food and has no coin to spare, sending him away. During this portion, Wilem disputes Kvothe’s claim that the Amyr belong to the church; they bet a jot.
Passing a hidden camp within greystones, the beggar is invited by a troupe of Edema Ruh led by Terris. Despite scarce water and a small fire, they share soup, bread, squash, and wine, and ask only for his story in return. Moved to tears and called “grandfather” by the boy Wint, the beggar—named Sceop—tells his tale so well that the Ruh invite him to join their family. He stays with them for years, telling many stories, and all are better for it.
