Chapter 106: Returning
Overview
Shaken by the Cthaeh, Kvothe endures grief and nightmares while Felurian awkwardly tries to comfort him. Felurian completes the shaed and entwines it with her memory. Driven by the Cthaeh’s warnings, Kvothe chooses to leave. Felurian guides him through greystones back to the mortal world after a tender farewell and promise to return.
Summary
In the aftermath of meeting the Cthaeh, Kvothe is overwhelmed by nightmares and grief. Felurian watches him with concern but, uncertain how to comfort, offers small wonders: strange fruit, singing birds, a warm drink, and curious gifts. Her hesitance and tentative touch reveal her inexperience with solace despite her power.
As time passes, Kvothe’s dreams fade and his appetite, wit, and curiosity return. He asks about the shaed, and Felurian reveals it is finished despite iron’s difficulty. Kvothe locates it where it hides in shadow, and Felurian joyfully lets him wear it for the first time, exulting in his recovery.
Felurian gathers the shaed around them, declaring that whenever it touches Kvothe he will remember her and return. This intimate binding underscores her desire to be remembered and hints at a hold that reaches beyond the Fae.
Spurred by the Cthaeh’s words—about his parents’ killer and Denna—Kvothe resolves to leave. He dresses, and Felurian, saddened yet accepting, fastens the shaed on him. She leads him through the forest to greystones, draws up his hood, and guides him across into the mortal world.
At the threshold, Kvothe admits he has no parting gift; Felurian asks only remembrance and a promise to return. After a tender farewell of few words and many kisses, he forces himself to walk away. When he looks back a second time, Felurian is gone, and Kvothe is once more in the mortal world.
