Chapter 143: Bloodless
Overview
Kvothe discovers his arrowcatch has been formalized as the Bloodless and is selling, earning him significant schema commissions. Flush with coin, he visits Devi, startling her by being alive, repays his loan, and retrieves his collateral. Devi reveals her true business model: cultivating obligations over money.
Summary
Back at the University, Kvothe returns to the Fishery and visits Stocks to ease back into artificing. Basil shows him a refined, molded version of Kvothe’s arrowcatch, now mass-produced, enamelled, and branded “Bloodless.” Kvothe learns Kilvin formalized the schema and asked Master Elodin to name it after news he’d been lost at sea.
Basil explains Stocks’ commission structure: the Fishery takes thirty percent and the schema holder receives ten percent. Twenty-eight Bloodless have sold at eight talents each, leaving Kvothe over twenty-two talents in commissions. Pleased, Kvothe collects the money and heads to Imre with a heavy purse.
Kvothe visits Devi, who is shocked—she thought Ambrose had arranged his death after they burned Ambrose’s rooms. Over lunch, Devi regains her composure and resumes their usual banter. Back at her rooms, Kvothe gifts her a copy of Celum Tinture and pays the nine talents he owes, though Devi cautions him to keep coin for tuition.
Devi returns his collateral—Rhetoric and Logic, talent pipes, sympathy lamp, and Denna’s ring—but hesitates to take the payment. Kvothe realizes Devi’s true game: lending as bait to secure favors and obligations rather than profit from interest. Devi cheerfully confirms it, taking his coin and welcoming him to the game.
