Chapter 58: Courting

Overview

Confined and anxious, Kvothe is summoned privately to the Maer’s sickbed. Alveron reveals his urgent need for an heir and that only Meluan Lackless suits his political constraints. Rejecting coercion, he secretly commissions Kvothe to court her through letters and songs, sending him to Caudicus for background and swearing him to secrecy.

Summary

After two days without a summons, Kvothe stews in his rooms, worried about losing his pawned lute and Denna’s case. A surprise visit from Stapes brings him to the Maer’s private chambers, where Maer Alveron lies pale, angry, and in pain, refusing Kvothe’s offer to fetch Caudicus.

Alveron laments appearing decades older than his forty years and admits a lifelong failure: he has no heir. He explains that power narrows choices and that a wife must be suitable, independent of the king’s control, and young enough to bear children. Politically, only one woman qualifies.

Pressed, Alveron names Meluan Lackless: educated, beautiful, and pursued by many. He spurns leveraging rank to “buy” her and shows discomfort at the idea of love, yet he clearly cares. He demands Kvothe’s discretion and asks for help—charm, manners, and songs—to aid his courtship.

Kvothe agrees, requesting more knowledge of Meluan. Alveron directs him to learn family histories from Caudicus, gives Kvothe an iron ring to prove his business, and insists total secrecy—even from Caudicus regarding marriage. As pain overcomes him, the Maer mutters about the nature of power and falls into a fitful sleep, leaving Kvothe with a covert charge.
