Chapter 86: The Broken Road
Overview
Still searching the Eld, the group’s morale frays until Hespe begins a rare tale about Jax and the moon. Dedan’s interruptions ignite an argument, but Tempi’s naive question dissolves the tension in shared laughter. The truce resets group dynamics, and Hespe agrees to restart the story tomorrow.
Summary
The company finishes searching the north side of the king’s road and turns to the south, their days blurring together. Evenings are filled with familiar fireside stories until Hespe offers a new one: the tale of Jax, a strange, unlucky boy who falls in love with the moon while living at the end of a broken road.
Hespe narrates Jax’s encounter with a tinker, a wager for happiness, and Jax discovering stars and the moon through spectacles. Jax demands the moon itself, claims the tinker’s goods by right of the bet, and sets off to find her. The tale mirrors the group’s wandering, prompting Dedan to interject with complaints that needle Hespe and sour the mood.
As tempers rise, Kvothe challenges Dedan to offer a better plan, and the quarrel threatens to boil over. Tempi abruptly asks what “balls” are, turning the fight into raucous laughter; the release reveals Tempi’s deliberate timing, and Kvothe recognizes Tempi’s quiet satisfaction at defusing the conflict.
With tensions eased, Dedan asks to hear the rest, but Hespe says the tale’s rhythm requires a fresh start. She promises to begin again tomorrow if Dedan keeps quiet, and he agrees, signaling a fragile reset in the group’s cohesion.
