Chapter 85: Interlude—Fences

Kvothe notices activity outside the Waystone as a young family arrives: Hap Bentley, his wife Mary, their daughter Syl, and baby Ben. Chronicler discreetly prepares documents for them as Kvothe serves cider and Bast yields his chair. Kvothe explains to Bast that Chronicler’s seal gives legal weight to wills and dispositions, often preferred over a priest’s potentially biased hand.

While Chronicler writes, Mary asks Bast to hold Ben; the baby frets until Kvothe entertains him with a rhythmic rhyme, briefly calming him before Mary returns. The family’s need and pride remain unspoken, but visible in worn clothes and shy manners.

After Mary and Hap finish, Kvothe learns Chronicler charged only a penny and a half, recognizing the Bentleys’ hardship. Kvothe details their bad harvests, dead goats, and recent levies. He and Chronicler trade verses about the king’s bleeders, emphasizing their rapacious reputation, while noting that armed escorts now protect them from popular anger.

Kvothe and Bast consider fabricating work again to slip the Bentleys money, but Kvothe insists on a different plan before the next levy. He reflects on the bitterness of taxes now that he owns property, contrasting it with his tax-free Edema life.

The scene closes with Kvothe directing Chronicler to resume writing as he admits he now understands how desperation can drive men to ambush and kill tax collectors, framing the mounting rural tension around the Waystone.
