Overview
Vashet assumes Kvothe’s training by attempting to drive him out with pain and contempt, declaring him unwelcome in Haert. Carceret publicly taunts him, testing his composure. Summary
Kvothe waits in a small park as Vashet arrives, revealing fluent Aturan and a cool appraisal. She declares herself his teacher and immediately tests him by circling with a willow rod, striking his arms and back, then delivering a blunt verdict: he is unwelcome, a thief of Adem secrets, and must learn the single lesson—leave Haert and never return.
At lunch, Kvothe hides his humiliation until Carceret pointedly sits with him. She taunts him about his cry under Vashet’s blows and bets he will flee by the second day, goading him to stay so she can savor his suffering. Kvothe answers in a low, cutting rebuke that publicly shames her without breaking decorum.
Returning to the park, Vashet orders a second lesson. Kvothe instead produces a heavy wooden training sword and strips off his shirt to show old whipping scars. He explains he endured multiple lashings at the University yet stayed to pursue knowledge, asserting that pain will not drive him away.
Kvothe hands Vashet the weighty blade and states his resolve: he will not abandon Tempi’s trust and will learn only what Haert can teach. If Vashet intends to be rid of him, she must do worse than welts. He closes his eyes, ready to face whatever comes next.
