Chapter 108: Quick

Kvothe and his group rest several days at the Pennysworth, enjoying free rooms and meals as thanks for safer roads. Kvothe teaches Tempi the lute and resumes Ketan training. He composes and performs a simple Felurian ballad that quickly spreads, shares true stories until they run out, then shamefully embellishes one. Dedan and Hespe grow closer, while Marten revels in drink and flirtation.

They depart after three days, traveling slowly toward Severen due to Hespe’s leg and a reluctance to part ways. Along the road, they meet a small, non-Ruh troupe. Kvothe trades his new Felurian song for gossip and hears a child recite a riddle rhyme about the Lackless door, which intrigues him. He gifts the troupe a silver coin toward a new bear and moves on.

That evening, Kvothe practices the Ketan with Tempi when four Adem mercenaries arrive. After Kvothe reflexively counters a dismissive push, an Adem woman lightly rebukes him and pointedly belittles his threat. The Adem confer closely with Tempi in tense silence before leaving, their gestures revealing an argument that leaves Tempi uneasy.

Tempi then reveals he must leave the next day for Haert to face his teacher, Shehyn, because teaching Kvothe is strictly forbidden and has brought him into serious trouble. Considering the Cthaeh’s advice about finding belief beyond the Stormwal, Kvothe asks to accompany him to Haert. Tempi agrees, and Kvothe commits to travel with him, hoping to lessen Tempi’s punishment and pursue answers.
