Chapter 35: Secrets

On his way to the Fishery, Kvothe is approached by a hooded teenage girl who covertly signals him to follow. In a secluded lane, she reveals herself as Nina from Trebon, relieved to have finally found him after searching the University while keeping his identity secret.

Nina explains she had nightmares after Trebon until she slept with the metal “amulet” Kvothe gave her, then began having a recurring, peaceful dream of the ancient pot. Determined to help, she commissioned a hollow horn case and, using vellum she illicitly cut from the Book of the Path, painted from memory what she had seen.

Unrolling the drawing, Kvothe recognizes Cinder—black eyes, winter setting, standing on water—and Haliax beneath three moons, his shadow dimming nearby light. A third figure appears armored with a blazing sigil and a blood-red upraised hand, which Nina found most frightening. Kvothe interprets this figure as an Amyr, rebuking Haliax and the Chandrian.

Nina insists the original vase showed eight figures, not seven, unsettling Kvothe’s certainty about the Chandrian’s number. She recalls other vague elements—a naked woman, a broken sword, a fire—but only this panel came clearly in her dreams.

As Nina rushes off to avoid her mother’s anger, Kvothe secures the drawing and reflects. He contrasts the Archives’ fairy-tale treatment of the Chandrian with the well-known, documented Amyr, realizing the vase predates church history. Remembering Haliax’s fear of the Amyr, Kvothe concludes the Amyr-Chandrian conflict is older and more complex than official accounts suggest.
