Chapter 128: Names

At dawn on the deciding day, Kvothe and Vashet watch the sunrise as she reiterates the responsibilities of carrying Saicere. Kvothe questions using a sword for mundane tasks, and Vashet argues that respectful use means good use, not reserving it solely for killing, which would warp a person.

They discuss Adem beliefs about fatherhood; Vashet refuses debate, urging Kvothe to keep his “barbarian” views quiet. Kvothe then asks about Magwyn calling him Maedre. Vashet explains deep names grant power and must be secret, shares that Tempi means “little iron,” and finally reveals Maedre means flame, thunder, and broken tree, but refuses further commentary.

They meet Shehyn. Kvothe declines her formal offer to stay, citing duty to return to the Maer. Shehyn approves but warns him not to claim the red or teach the Ketan, allowing him only to say he has studied with the Adem. She notes that whether he wins or loses abroad, Ademre’s reputation benefits.

Shehyn then invokes ritual to answer Kvothe’s earlier question about the Rhinta, setting strict rules of silence and patience. She tells an ancient tale of a fallen empire with seven cities and one, the remembered Tariniel; an enemy who corrupted seven; six traitors who destroyed six cities; and one who remembered the Lethani. She concludes by naming the seven remembered traitors and their signs: Cyphus (blue flame), Stercus (iron’s thrall), Ferule (chill, dark-eyed), Usnea (decay), Grey Dalcenti (never speaks), Pale Alenta (blight), and Alaxel (the lord of seven, bearing the shadow’s hame).
