Simmon and Wilem lead Kvothe deep into the Archives to Sub‑Three, cautioning him to be polite with a resident named Puppet. After theatrical false starts at the doorway, Puppet admits them to candlelit, cluttered rooms filled with books and puppets. He sheds a dramatic robe, reveals himself as older and eccentric, and studies Kvothe closely while whittling.

Puppet calls Kvothe a “look‑er” rather than a true E’lir, insisting E’lir means “see‑er.” He displays a carved profile of Kvothe and chides him that looking too hard impedes seeing. When Simmon asks about ranks, Puppet hints at sources, precisely locating a book in the stacks, showing his intimate knowledge of the Archives.

As Puppet animates a Tehlin priest marionette, Kvothe raises his Amyr question: who disbanded them, Emperor Nalto or the Church? Puppet replies the Church did—only a pontifex could affect the Amyr—while the priest puppet menaces and strikes a peasant girl, reflecting institutional zeal and violence. Wilem speculates about textual alterations; Puppet praises the thought but dismisses a Lights of History passage attributing the decree to Nalto as nonsense.

Emboldened, Kvothe asks about the locked Four‑Plate Door. Puppet’s tone turns stern; he says it should not concern a student, effectively warning Kvothe away. The bell interrupts; Simmon departs. Puppet ends the meeting, returning to his reading and asking them to bring Kvothe back so he can “do more work on him,” reinforcing the theme of learning to see, not merely look.
