Chapter 9: A Civil Tongue

Kvothe, freshly washed, enters the dark admissions hall and presents his tile to the Chancellor before standing under the table’s lights. He notes the Masters’ fatigue as Arwyl begins with Medicinal questions; Kvothe answers properly and prudently claims he would defer diagnosis to senior Medica students.

Brandeur quizzes him on exchange and trifoil navigation; Kvothe handles the currency but admits ignorance on the compass location. Elodin first asks a facetious “spades” question, drawing scorn, then intones a weighty query about where the moon goes; Kvothe honestly cannot answer. Elxa Dal follows with sympathy fundamentals, which Kvothe handles; Mandrag passes.

Lorren asks for the Archives’ rules, which Kvothe recites, then Kilvin tests galvanic and material properties that Kvothe knows from recent work. Finally, Hemme abandons protocol and accuses Kvothe of setting his rooms on fire. Stung by the slur “ravel,” Kvothe blurts a wish that Hemme had been inside; the Chancellor immediately threatens charges and demands civility.

Recovering, Kvothe apologizes and explains that “ravel” insults the Edema Ruh, referencing historical persecution. The Chancellor adopts the role of Linguist and asks for the word’s etymology; Kvothe traces it to Alcyon’s proclamation against traveling “rabble,” shortened through enclitic change, with a likely link to “ravelend.” The Chancellor thanks him and instructs him to wait while the Masters confer, leaving Kvothe’s fate pending and faculty divisions clear.
