Chapter 33: Fire

Kvothe prepares to travel when a late, bungled message from Denna forces him to postpone seeing her. He sends a reply through the boy and heads to a forest rendezvous, where he, Wilem, Simmon, Fela, and Mola finalize a plan to neutralize Ambrose’s mommet. Mola unexpectedly brings Devi, whose hatred of Ambrose and sympathy skill make her a willing ally.

Fela, dressed to captivate, departs to occupy Ambrose at dinner, coached by Devi and Mola on keeping him public and distracted. Kvothe assigns signaling twigs: he will alert Devi when to apply heat at distance—first wax, then clay. Devi asserts her competence; the team splits, with Kvothe and Wilem going to the Golden Pony to maintain normal appearances.

At the Pony, a planted alarm of “Fire!” lets Kvothe lead the rush upstairs. Finding smoke at Ambrose’s door, he uses a concealed siege stone to smash it and charge in. A bureau burns—proof the mommet was hidden among Ambrose’s clothes. Kvothe smashes the window and heaves drawers into the street while Simmon, outside, ensures anything surviving is destroyed underfoot. The crowd helps douse what remains; the room is wrecked but contained.

Ambrose arrives furious, publicly insults Kvothe, and looks a fool as bystanders credit Kvothe with saving the inn. Kvothe departs after a barbed remark to the proprietor. Later by the bonfire, Fela and Sim recount humiliating Ambrose further. The team shares extra jests planted at the scene. Kvothe reveals he lifted from Ambrose a jeweler’s claim slip for Denna’s ring—and about six talents—positioning him to reclaim it.
