As they travel, Kvothe catalogs everyone’s quirks and worries about the group’s fitness for the task.

Reaching the attack zone—an isolated twenty-mile stretch—Marten scouts and reports no nearby threats. Around the fire, Kvothe lays out a methodical plan: Marten will scout a mile back from the road; pairs will sweep thin strips for worn trails; they will shift camp every five days, resupply from Crosson, and keep fires smokeless using rennel wood. Everyone prepares a cover story and a “third night” infiltration rule if captured, while Kvothe privately plans to track teammates using hairs as a dowsing focus.

Concerns arise about Tempi’s bright red Adem clothes and limited Aturan. During planning, Tempi corrects “miles,” shows he grasps the mission (“hunt visantha”), and agrees to switch to a grey hunting shirt, reserving red for fighting. When Dedan mocks him, Tempi snaps back, and a confrontation turns into a brief sparring match where Tempi easily controls the exchange, lightly cuffing Dedan and demonstrating superior technique.
