Chapter 138: Notes

Overview

Kvothe searches for Denna at the Four Tapers and pays the innkeeper for a supposed note, only to discover it is merely his own letter, leaving Denna’s whereabouts unknown. Later, he defends his account of the Eld ambush to the Maer, who finally believes him. Meluan arrives, heralding the promised riddle for discussion.

Summary

With hours before his private meeting, Kvothe goes to the Four Tapers to find Denna. The innkeeper, eyeing profit, claims she left and offers a found note. Kvothe pays, encouraged by the familiar fold of the paper, hoping for directions or a rendezvous.

Outside, Kvothe opens the note and realizes it is his own letter to Denna—the tinker-delivered message—giving him no new information. Denna’s trail remains cold, and Kvothe leaves with only the loss of coin and lingering uncertainty.

At eighth bell, Kvothe visits the Maer without Caesura and is received by Stapes. Alveron, curious and skeptical, presses Kvothe about the Eld operation. Kvothe confirms his written report: five companions routed twenty-seven mercenaries and their uncanny leader who vanished.

The Maer initially rejects the account as an unfunny exaggeration, but Kvothe insists, offers verifiable proof at the site, and explains Dedan’s role. Alveron relents, accepts the truth, and calls it strange and bitter news, then asks for Kvothe’s assessment of the disappearing leader.

Before Kvothe can respond, Meluan’s approach is announced. Alveron brightens and hints that she brings the puzzling question he had mentioned earlier, shifting the meeting toward the promised riddle.

Who Appears

  • Kvothe
Searches for Denna, unwittingly buys back his own letter; later defends the Eld victory to the Maer and awaits Meluan’s question.
  • Maer Alveron
Skeptical of Kvothe’s report on the bandits, then accepts it; frames the coming discussion around a puzzling question from Meluan.
  • Innkeeper at the Four Tapers
Greedy, sells Kvothe a ‘note’ supposedly from Denna, which is actually Kvothe’s own letter.
  • Stapes
Shows Kvothe into the Maer’s sitting room and facilitates the meeting.
  • Meluan Alveron (née Lackless)
Announced arrival interrupts; she brings the question the Maer intended to pose.
