Chapter 72: Horses

Kvothe finishes the Maer’s requested song, “Nothing but Roses,” earlier than expected and goes out seeking Denna on Cendling night. He spots Denna purposefully heading into rougher streets and, curious about her patron, follows her discreetly over rooftops.

From above an alley, Kvothe sees a girl sprawled on the ground and Denna confronting a bald, broad-shouldered man with a knife at his throat. Denna orders the shaken girl to leave, faces down the man with controlled threat, and drives him off. She then comforts the girl and leads her to a respectable inn.

Kvothe takes a hidden seat nearby and bribes the serving girl for privacy to eavesdrop. Denna gently questions the girl, learning she fled home after a wealthy son “got handsy,” chased a romantic fantasy, and ended up exploited and beaten.

Denna, fiercely practical, denounces naive rescue myths and lays out three options: apprenticeship to a trade; return home with a plausible story despite social stigma; or pursue sex work strategically as a courtesan with training, manners, and select clientele to retain some control. She frames each path in terms of costs and consequences.

Using a horse metaphor, Denna explains that if the girl chooses whoring, she should aim to be “a duchess” rather than a dockside drab, yet warns that even the finest horse is still ridden. She concludes that freedom and control require paying a price and urges the girl to decide what she wants most. After they leave, Kvothe remains, pondering her hard truths.
