Chapter 11: Haven

Returning to the University burdened by new debt but in good spirits, Kvothe brings gifts to the secluded rooftop above Mains to play for Auri. Auri appears and joyfully accepts bee mead, barley bread, and smoked salmon, then gives Kvothe a lavender candle she made, a tender kiss on his forehead, and an open invitation to shelter safely with her in the Underthing.

Master Elodin arrives unexpectedly. Auri, cautious but composed, accepts a cinnas fruit from him and hosts a small meal she assembles. They share bread, fish, olives, and the fruit. Auri affirms her name—given by Kvothe—and Elodin politely approves. The gathering is gentle, and Elodin watches Auri with clear, sane attention.

Afterward, as Elodin and Kvothe depart, Kvothe anxiously confronts Elodin, fearing Auri might be forced into Haven. Nearly driven to rashness, Kvothe plainly demands a promise. Elodin swears by name, power, and moon not to send anyone after Auri, agreeing Haven is wrong for her if there’s a better option. They discuss getting Auri new clothes and supplies, which she will accept only through Kvothe.

Elodin asks why Kvothe chose the name “Auri,” then casually invites him to an upcoming naming class and recommends Teccam’s Underlying Principles. Learning Kvothe is still banned from the Archives, Elodin leads him to Master Lorren’s window and bluntly advocates for reinstatement. After haggling and Elodin’s extreme “thumbs” jest, Lorren relents and restores Kvothe’s access.

The next day Kvothe pays his tuition with Riem, then enrolls for Medica observation, Physiognomy, Physic, Ferrous and Cupric Metallurgy, Adept Sympathy, and Elodin’s newly listed course, wryly titled “Introduction to Not Being a Stupid Jackass.”
