Chapter 23: Principles

Before a Felling night performance at Anker’s, Kvothe tells Wilem and Simmon about worsening symptoms. They consider Fishery exposure or lingering plum bob effects; Sim notes metheglin’s spices might trigger free principles. Kvothe plays until a sudden, bone-deep chill drives him upstairs, where he uses a blood-linked candle binding to draw heat from the hearth below, overshoots into fever, and breaks the bindings.

In his room, Simmon identifies the episode as binder’s chills. Kvothe shows a red burn-like rash; moments later, an invisible stabbing wound appears. Realizing it is active malfeasance, Kvothe hardens his Alar, splits his mind, and stifles further attacks.

They debate the culprit. Kvothe blames Ambrose, but Wilem argues Ambrose prefers distance and spectacle-averse methods; public malfeasance would expose him. Sim agrees Ambrose would more likely use Jamison to dowse, not keep blood. Pressed, Kvothe admits borrowing from Devi, who holds his blood and was expelled for Conduct Unbecoming; she recently pressed him for information and even offered sex, which he awkwardly ignored—potentially offending her.

To avoid the Medica and likely expulsion for his recent rooftop injuries, Kvothe declines to report immediately. Wilem and Sim insist he sleep under watch. After they leave, Kvothe runs rooftops to set a blood-marked leaf decoy at the House of the Wind, but an oncoming storm would wash the blood and still the leaves.

On the rooftop, Auri finds him; a lightning flash reveals blood streaks on his hands like Amyr tattoos. When Kvothe incautiously asks how she knows of the Ciridae, Auri vanishes into the storm-lit night, leaving Kvothe alone with unresolved danger and narrowed suspects.
