Overview
Kvothe’s sea journey back to the University is calm and restorative. His Felurian tale and Adem training earn the sailors’ respect, leading to camaraderie and shared knowledge. He learns seafaring lore and knots, and the voyage gradually softens his resentment toward the Maer and Lady Meluan.
Summary
Kvothe boards a ship bound for the University and enjoys an uneventful passage with favorable winds. The crew already knows of his encounter with Felurian, giving him modest notoriety. Kvothe plays his new song about Felurian and repeatedly recounts the story for the sailors.
He also tells of his time with the Adem. Skeptical at first, the sailors are convinced when Kvothe shows his sword and throws their best wrestler three times. Their attitude shifts from curiosity to a rough but sincere friendship.
During the voyage, the sailors share sea stories, teach Kvothe star names, and speak of wind, water, and women. Though he fails at tying knots, he proves adept at untying them. The daily rhythms of shipboard life and camaraderie ease the bitterness Kvothe feels toward Maer Alveron and Lady Meluan, leaving him steadier as he nears the University.
