Chapter 50: Chasing the Wind
Overview
Suspended from University privileges, Kvothe accepts Count Threpe’s urgent opportunity to seek patronage from Maer Alveron in Vintas. He prepares to leave, receives Elodin’s guidance about risk and naming, and arranges collateral with Devi—pledging prized items, including Denna’s ring, for a year and a day—to fund the journey.
Summary
Kvothe ends winter term by giving his admissions tile to Fela and loses access to University resources. Midwinter diversions fade; with spring, friends grow busy and Kvothe spends time at the Eolian with Deoch, Stanchion, and the lukewarm Threpe, while social circles still shun him after the trial. He considers leaving but lacks direction and cannot find Devi to repay his debt until he learns she is away.
Threpe arrives excited, revealing a letter from Maer Alveron seeking a discreet, clever, well-spoken, possibly musical young man. Seeing a rare chance for patronage—and a path toward his Amyr investigation—Kvothe agrees to depart at once. Threpe promises a letter of introduction, and Kvothe offers to help draft it.
Kvothe bids hasty farewells: Wilem, Simmon, Auri, Kilvin, and Arwyl respond supportively; Elxa Dal urges boldness. Unable to find Elodin at his office, Kvothe stores his belongings with Anker and readies a light travelsack. On Stonebridge, Elodin appears, discusses edges, danger, and the origins of “chasing the wind,” urging risk in moderation and confirming he knows the wind’s name. He sends Kvothe off with a boyish “spit for luck.”
Before leaving, Kvothe meets the returned Devi to settle debts. Short on funds for rapid travel to Severen, he proposes collateral instead of immediate repayment. Devi rejects further loans but accepts collateral: Kvothe’s copy of Rhetoric and Logic, his sympathy hand lamp, his Eolian talent pipes, and—after negotiation—Denna’s ring, with the strict condition it be kept safe and unworn.
They agree to a term of a year and a day: if Kvothe does not repay nine talents by then, the items are forfeit. With arrangements set and Threpe’s introduction pending, Kvothe commits to depart swiftly for Vintas to seek the Maer.
