Chapter 110: Beauty and Branch
Overview
Kvothe and Tempi reach Haert, where Kvothe waits outside the school and meets Shehyn in disguise. Shehyn tests Kvothe, effortlessly defeating him and revealing the Adem principle of striking the “branch” rather than root or leaf. At the sword tree, she formalizes this lesson, while Tempi’s judgment remains unresolved.
Summary
Kvothe and Tempi complete their fifteen-day journey into the Stormwal foothills, arriving at Haert, an understated Adem town built into the land. Tempi goes inside to seek Shehyn, leaving Kvothe to wait. Kvothe studies the stonework when an older Adem woman engages him in a discussion about beauty and use.
The woman, dressed in white with a yellow cap, leads Kvothe to a sheltered valley while a boy carries his belongings inside. As they observe stream and stone, they debate whether beauty arises from use, nature, or simple being. She introduces the sword tree, the Latantha, whose razor leaves spin dangerously in the wind.
Amid this discourse, the woman asks about the Ketan; Kvothe answers cautiously, and she reveals herself as Shehyn. She explains why mercenaries wear red and why she wears white, then tests Kvothe. Despite Kvothe’s best forms and speed, Shehyn moves with perfect economy, effortlessly touching and throwing him.
Seeing Kvothe’s tears, Shehyn hears his praise likening her to wall, stream, and tree. She demonstrates the sword tree’s danger with a sharp leaf, then uses it to teach the root-branch-leaf concept: strength must be spent at the “branch.” She shows Kvothe where he is vulnerable in a stance and asks him to apply the lesson to Heron Falling.
Kvothe identifies Shehyn’s “branch” points (knee, side, shoulder) and successfully executes Thunder Upward with minimal force. Shehyn converts the throw into a recovery step, regains balance, and, after a long assessing look, ends the session, leaving the question of Tempi’s fate still open.
