Denna’s letter explains her sudden departure: she is seeking better opportunities and cheaper living outside Imre. She writes of Yll’s milder climate easing her lungs, travels through the Small Kingdoms, time at sea, broadened cursing, and glimpsing an Adem mercenary. She remains devoted to the harp and is housed with an unnamed, skilled gentleman to further her study. She thinks of Kvothe fondly and hopes his lute case serves him well.

In Elodin’s class, unusual formality marks the day: Elodin arrives on time, in fresh robes, and takes the lectern. He recounts the University’s older era when Naming ruled above all crafts, asserting that Naming cannot be taught by rote though it can be found.

Elodin calls Fela forward, revealing she has found the name of stone eight times. He asks her to demonstrate by making a ring. After tense minutes and Elodin’s abrupt jolting guidance, Fela speaks to the stone; it fractures into sand and gravel, revealing a flawless black ring with myriad facets.

Elodin inspects the ring, then formally promotes Fela to Re’lar, sliding the ring onto her left hand and cautioning about the right. The class reacts with awe, underscoring that true Naming has tangible power and that Fela’s advancement sets a new bar for Kvothe and the others.
