Chapter 7: Admissions

Bleary and anxious about admissions, Kvothe eats at Anker’s and is approached by a richly dressed Modegan woman praising him for breaking Ambrose’s arm. After a toast, she abruptly dissolves into tears and flees. Soon Kvothe notes strange plum-and-spice tastes and smells.

At the admissions queue, Kvothe taunts Ambrose. Ambrose’s smug remark about “plum” triggers Kvothe’s realization he has been drugged. Kvothe sprints to Simmon’s rooms, where erratic behavior confirms something is wrong.

Simmon identifies a plum bob: an alchemical agent that removes inhibitions while leaving clarity and memory largely intact. Kvothe, intent on knifing Ambrose, yields his knife when Simmon establishes himself as Kvothe’s “touchstone,” guiding decisions and rating bad ideas. Sim bars Kvothe from admissions, calling it an “eight,” and fetches Fela to trade for a later slot.

When Fela arrives, Kvothe’s unfiltered candor underscores the drug’s effects. Sim explains the plum bob’s history, selective moral amnesia, and lingering echoes; the Medica is avoided to prevent confinement in Haven. Kvothe agrees to wait out the dose under Sim’s supervision, repeatedly deferring impulses as Sim says “no.”

By nightfall Kvothe’s inhibitions return, but his emotions run hot and memory grows painfully vivid. Alone, he relives tender memories of his parents more sharply than the Chandrian massacre. Overwhelmed, he breaks down until Auri slips in through his window, soothes him, and holds him as he grieves, admitting he will never see his mother again.
