Chapter 68: The Cost of a Loaf
Overview
Kvothe spends idyllic days with Denna in Severen-Low until she abruptly disappears, leaving him despondent and creatively stalled on the Maer’s courtship. To buy time and address lingering danger, Kvothe proposes a protective charm against Caudicus, convincingly demonstrates sympathetic risk, secures access to the alchemist’s tower, and argues a brief pause will heighten Meluan’s anticipation. He requests the Maer’s bodily samples to tune the protection, winning guarded consent and three days’ grace.
Summary
Kvothe enjoys several carefree days in Severen-Low with Denna—riding, swimming, singing, and talking—while channeling his unspoken feelings into letters and songs tailored for Meluan Lackless. Despite the idyll, a suitor named Gerred appears, possessive and desperate, signaling Denna’s familiar pattern of fleeting attachments.
Without warning, Denna disappears, leaving no note. Kvothe searches familiar haunts in vain and returns heartsick. His creative efforts collapse; letters come haltingly and his music turns harsh. Remembering his father’s advice about letting the “silt settle,” he recognizes he must pause before forcing more work on the Maer’s courtship.
Needing a credible diversion, Kvothe warns the Maer of non-poisonous threats from Caudicus. To prove the risk, he uses sympathy on the Maer’s fingerprint smudge on an apple, pricking it to make the Maer’s finger bleed. Convinced, the Maer asks about defenses; Kvothe proposes crafting a personal protective charm.
Kvothe requests access to Caudicus’ tower workshop and time to gather materials in Severen-Low, hinting at desired favors, including help with a separate project and patronage for a musician friend. He estimates several days’ work. When the Maer considers replacing him for letter-writing, Kvothe argues that brief silence will heighten Meluan’s anticipation rather than harm progress.
The Maer grants three days and agrees to provide bodily samples—blood, saliva, skin, hair, and urine—despite superstitious concerns, after Kvothe notes the Maer is of no use to him dead. With approval and keys forthcoming via Stapes, Kvothe gains time to recover creatively while advancing the Maer’s protection.
