Chapter 140: Just Rewards

In the morning Kvothe receives a letter from Maer Alveron: despite valuing Kvothe’s service, the Maer dismisses him to preserve Meluan’s comfort, demands his ring returned, but grants a pardon for the Levinshir killings, a letter of credit for University tuition, a performer’s writ in the Maer’s lands, and formal thanks.

A second delivery arrives: a crude wooden ring branded with Meluan’s name and a scathing letter. Bredon explains the ring’s dire symbolism in court—beneath even servants—and notes the political fallout. Word spreads fast; Lord Praevek immediately asks for his ring back. Bredon reluctantly reclaims his own ring to avoid ruin, while warning Kvothe not to wear the wooden ring.

Kvothe visits Stapes to return Alveron’s ring and the two rings Stapes had given him. Stapes, bound to court custom, takes back the gold but insists Kvothe keep the bone ring as a personal debt beyond courtly games. Kvothe tallies his remaining funds and reflects that, though rewarded, he lacks a patron and the promised support for his Amyr search.

Choosing discretion, Kvothe hides the Maer’s papers, packs essentials, keeps Caesura and his shaed, and silently escapes the estate via the garden window. In Severen-Low he sells the nobles’ slander sheets to a bookbinder, unloads fine clothes and most of Caudicus’ books, and finds a ship departing for Junpui the next day.

That night he searches Severen for Denna without success, then drinks at a dockside brothel, leaving his sack of court rings for the women to divide. Later, overlooking Severen-Low with a dockworker, Kvothe pockets Meluan’s wooden ring as a memento instead of discarding it.
