Chapter 95: Chased
Overview
Drawn by Felurian’s song at a moonlit pool, the company hesitates as Kvothe decides to approach. Hespe restrains Dedan from following, while Marten panics and Tempi withdraws. Kvothe pursues Felurian into the woods, and they make love, marking a perilous crossing into fae entanglement and separating him from his companions.
Summary
At a moonlit pool, Felurian appears and sings in an otherworldly voice that carries impossibly across the clearing. Kvothe and his companions feel the pull: Marten murmurs in dread, Tempi shows rare surprise, Dedan locks up, and Hespe watches him warily. Though tempted, Kvothe initially resists and looks away, steadying himself.
As Felurian resumes singing, the allure deepens, stirring memories and desire in Kvothe. He weighs fear against curiosity and pride, convincing himself that, as Arcanist and Ruh, he should confront this magic of song. He declares he will meet the group later and steps openly into the clearing, intensifying Felurian’s attention.
Behind Kvothe, Marten urgently warns him back; Tempi remains detached; Dedan tries to rush after, but Hespe tackles and pins him to stop him. Felurian laughs with inhuman delight and flees lightly into the scrub. Kvothe gives chase with extraordinary speed and childlike fearlessness, driven by her beckoning presence.
In the woods, the pursuit becomes an intimate encounter. Felurian alternately teases and allows closeness until they seize each other. Their lovemaking escalates, described in sensual, musical cadence, culminating as Kvothe tenses on the brink of release, fully enmeshed in Felurian’s enchantment and effectively parted from his companions.
