Chapter 122: Leaving

At dawn, Kvothe prepares to leave his quarters with his lute, travelsack, and shaed, then goes to Vashet’s home. Vashet, unselfconscious and in the middle of dressing, explains that Penthe and Carceret have both visited: Penthe defended Kvothe despite not knowing details, while Carceret praised Vashet for being hard on him. Vashet decides she will not “break the puzzle,” keeps teaching, and has Kvothe leave his conspicuous gear to prevent talk but bring the cloak to learn to fight in it.

Training resumes as if nothing happened. Vashet teaches Kvothe to move without tripping on the shaed, to use it to bind or disarm, and notes its fine strength without recognizing its nature. Days pass; Kvothe spars with Celean until their bouts are nearly even, and he protects himself from her crude attacks. Penthe occasionally chats with him at meals, offering rare friendliness, but Kvothe remains wary, measuring every word with Vashet as she sometimes watches him with grim intensity.

As their tension slowly fades, Vashet abruptly announces that Kvothe’s test will be tomorrow. The news excites and unsettles Kvothe, who realizes he had nearly forgotten the ultimate purpose of his training amid language, Lethani, and swordwork. Vashet cites practical reasons—weather and travel—but also admits political ones: the longer Kvothe stays, the more people grow fond of him.

Vashet reveals that Penthe blackened Carceret’s eye arguing over Kvothe, and that Celean and the children have warmed to him, indicating growing division in the school. Shehyn must balance justice with harmony; acting before sentiment hardens is wisest. Vashet cautions that the test is about fitness, not just skill, and unlike an Adem, Kvothe will get only one chance. Ready or not, the decision has been made.
