Chapter 91: Flame, Thunder, Broken Tree

From a ridgeline above a bowl-shaped hollow, Kvothe, Tempi, and Marten observe a sizable encampment beneath a massive oak: multiple tents, two dampened fires, and scattered posts. Marten estimates numbers far higher than expected. The plan shifts to hit-and-run attrition: kill a few, flee, lie in wait.

Marten fails to find Dedan and Hespe; moments later their blundered approach triggers the alarm. Bandits pour from tents, throw up plank walls against posts, and ready bows, turning the camp into a quick fortress. With no fire or links, Kvothe lacks obvious arcane leverage as volleys arc toward Dedan and Hespe.

Kvothe drops into the Heart of Stone, seizes the dead sentry as a perfect link, and methodically stabs the corpse to wound corresponding targets: kidneys, eye, throat, legs. Panic rises until a chain-mailed leader emerges, restores order, and after being shot through the thigh by Marten, snaps the arrow and coolly points out their position.

Under massed return fire, Kvothe divides his mind and, using his own blood for heat, severs multiple bowstrings at once, saving them but plunging himself into binder’s chills. With only one active bowman briefly threatening, his knife breaks and hypothermia worsens. He forces Marten to shoot the central oak, then rams an arrow into the ground to complete a perilous sympathetic binding.

As the leader prepares the next move, Kvothe invokes “As above, so below,” linking tree and earth. Wind stills; lightning flashes, brightness and thunder overwhelm him. The chapter ends with the strike and Kvothe falling into unconsciousness.
