Chapter 125: Caesura
Overview
Shehyn orders Vashet to choose Kvothe’s sword, and Vashet selects Saicere, which Kvothe instinctively names Caesura. The choice carries solemn responsibility and unsettles Vashet. Magwyn begins teaching the sword’s Atas, revealing 236 previous owners and binding Kvothe to memorize the lineage, underscoring the weapon’s ancient, communal weight.
Summary
Hungover, Kvothe is led by Vashet and Shehyn to a locked, candlelit room of swords. Shehyn instructs Vashet to choose a blade for her student, making the decision explicitly Vashet’s responsibility. Vashet tests many swords with Kvothe, anxiously gauging fit and Shehyn’s silent judgment.
After several rejections, Vashet offers a burnished grey blade with a modest hand guard. Kvothe moves through Ketan forms and feels immediate harmony with it. Vashet presents the choice to Shehyn, who approves; Vashet names the sword Saicere and gives it to Kvothe, while he hears in it the name Caesura.
They depart quietly, and Vashet spends the day drilling Kvothe in meticulous sword care, carry, and adjustments to form, emphasizing that the sword belongs to the school and will be returned when he can no longer fight. Kvothe’s offhand question about a broken blade horrifies Vashet, revealing the weapon’s sacred status.
After lunch, Vashet brings Kvothe to Magwyn, who will teach Saicere’s Atas, the complete history of the sword’s bearers. Kvothe respectfully repeats each entry as Magwyn reads, hearing a long succession of owners—most dying violently—until the recitation grows grim and monotonous.
Kvothe asks how many owners there have been. Magwyn insists on the name Saicere but reveals there have been 236 bearers; Kvothe will be the 237th. Kvothe privately affirms the name Caesura. When he tries to leave for supper, Magwyn informs him he must remain until he learns the entire Atas by heart, with meals brought in and a nearby room for sleep.
